About us

A father-and-son labor of love.

We didn't set out to build a company. We set out to build the thing we wished we'd had.

Articulo is built by two people: David, a dad, and Cole, his son. We're both dyslexic. We both grew up with speech issues — the kind where you know exactly what you want to say and it comes out too fast, or jumbled, or not the way you heard it in your head.

We're not the first in our family. David's father had the same thing. So did his father. Several generations of men in our line have worked through the same struggle, each one mostly on his own, each one figuring it out the hard way.

When it showed up in Cole, we recognized it immediately. What we also recognized was how little had changed about the practice part. A speech therapist can only see a kid so often. Everything in between is worksheets, repetition, and an adult saying "say it again" — which is exhausting for the kid and the adult, and quietly stops happening after a couple of weeks.

We wanted something that listens, doesn't judge, and shows a kid that the work is working.

So we built it, nights and weekends. We started with the problem we know best — pace and clarity — and built an app that measures what a therapist measures, scores every word, saves every attempt, and turns it into progress a kid can see. Then we asked a speech-language pathologist to tell us everything we'd gotten wrong, and she's been part of it ever since.

We're testing it now with real families and real therapists. It's free while we get it right. If it helps one kid feel a little less alone with this — a little more in control of their own voice — it will have done its job.

Why it's personal

It runs in the family.

Dyslexia and speech difficulties often travel together, and they often run in families. Ours is one of them. That's not a sad story — it's the reason we understand the kid on the other side of the screen, and the reason we'll keep working on this long after it stops being new.

How we work

Built with therapists, tested by kids.

Every scoring decision in Articulo has been argued over with a licensed SLP. Every screen has been tested on a kid who would rather be doing something else. If it doesn't survive both, it doesn't ship. We read every message that comes in, and most of the app you see today started as something a tester told us was confusing.

David

Dad. Dyslexic, grew up with speech issues, watched his own father and grandfather live with the same thing. Handles the testing with families, and the conversations with therapists and schools.

Cole

Son, programmer, gamer. Dyslexic, grew up with speech issues, and the reason this exists. The first kid every feature gets tested on — and the toughest critic.
